This database provides a set of 45 variables related to UNGA voting affinity vis-à-vis the PRC, official lending, and other bilateral economic and political indicators for China and 43 African countries over the period 2000-2020. The indicators are grouped into four categories: voting data, loan and debt, economic indicators, and political indicators.

This dataset was compiled in order to conduct research and econometric work for the China Horizons journal article “Lend your Money, Lose your Friend?” - Chinese Official Lending and Bilateral Political Alignment: The Case of Africa, written by Clément Durif, Junior Research Fellow at the Asia Centre.

China’s Economic Data Repository (CED)”

Data on the Chinese economy and EU-China economic ties is sometimes scarce and difficult to find. Furthermore, some key macroeconomic variables are defined differently, meaning estimates need to be made to work with indicators comparable with the rest of the world.
This dashboard, developed by Bruegel, addresses these shortcomings by displaying what has been deemed the most relevant macroeconomic data for China and EU-China relations.
The dashboard is divided into four sections:

1. Our proprietary indicators of sentiment about the Chinese economy, featuring consumer and investor sentiment, as well as our own indicator of economic policy uncertainty;
2. High-frequency data, both for macro and financial variables, such as retail sales, housing transactions and exchange rate movements;
3. Low-frequency data, mainly consisting of fiscal, debt and external indicators, as well as productivity and innovation ones;
4. EU-China trade and investment data.

Data (1) and (2) are updated monthly; (3) and (4) are updated quarterly. Additional sections will follow in the future.

Chinese party-state politics – a catalogue of policy documents

Under WP3, CBS will produce a database of key central-level Chinese policy documents intended for the policy community, researchers, and the general public within the EU. The database will catalogue and provide commentary on key/guiding policy documents issued by the Central Committee and/or the State Council within the research area of WP3.
