China’s Economic Data Repository (CED)”
What is this database offering?
The China Economic Database provides the public with an accessible and coordinated set of statistics on China’s economic development and outlook. The database collects and presents statistics which are otherwise practically quite difficult to access for most observers, with figures originating from untranslated Chinese government sites, EUROSTAT, the UN, World Bank, and several other sources. These data not only contextualize China’s present economic circumstances but are also critical to understand where it is heading.
Why did we decide to create this database?
Fundamentally, the China Economic Database was designed to bring remote, untranslated yet publicly available data to a broader audience of policymakers, researchers, students, and more. Most notably, statistics illustrating EU-China economic relations feature prominently in the database, with sector-specific trade, investment, renewable energy, and media sentiment trackers for Member-State relations with China.
What can the database be used for?
The database can be used proactively by policymakers, researchers, students, and the broader public to strengthen their understanding of China’s future development, or it can be used reactively to contextualize significant events involving the EU, China, and others. Documented use-cases of the database include researchers and students using it as a reference for their investigations, policy briefs, and other materials.
When was it created and/or updated?
The database was created on 29 June 2023 and has been both expanded and updated every month since then. It was last updated on 11 March 2025 featuring a new section on China’s energy sector.
