Other China communities

While we at China Horizons pride ourselves in covering some of the most essential questions related to China, we are not the only cross-country European project or network working on these matters. Below you find a list of other projects as well as networks that share our vision of further improving European research on China – doing so from different angles.

The list is non-exhaustive and many other interesting projects and networks on China exist. On this page, we have chosen to highlight (1) the two sister projects to our China Horizons project (namely ReConnect China and EuroHub4Sino) and (2) three active and highly useful networks related to European research on China (CHERN, ETNC and CHOICE).

ReConnect China

ReConnect China is a project that, similarly to China Horizons, is funded under the Horizon Europe programme. The question this project wants to answer is in which domains EU collaboration with China is desirable, possible, or impossible. To answer this question, four central domains of research have been discerned: science and technology, economy and trade, domestic governance, and foreign policy. The knowledge generated in this project brings together stakeholders and experts in a Europe-China Knowledge Forum. Apart from stakeholders in the realm of policy making and the business community, the project also aims at raising awareness on China among the general public and European youth in particular.

EuroHub4Sino

EuroHub4Sino is a project that, similarly to China Horizons, is funded under the Horizon Europe programme. EuroHub4Sino brings together some of the best researchers in Europe to foster independent European knowledge on China as well as high-level experts on AI and Big Data to develop an enhanced digital platform to support researchers and other stakeholders. Besides engaging in quality policy research and analysis, EuroHub4Sino aims to develop an enhanced digital platform to support European China experts’ research, collaboration and communication activities.

CHERN (China in Europe Research Network)

CHERN – the China in Europe Research Network – is a platform for knowledge exchange about China’s increasing presence in Europe among academic and non-academic communities. The network aims to (a) pool current and stimulate further research on China’s deepening economic engagements with Europe; (b) develop an interdisciplinary, holistic, cross-sectoral and pan-European understanding of the variegated impacts and strategies associated with these engagements; (c) comprehend the likely political and geo-political consequences of these; and (d) generate input on the policy implications of these issues involving relevant agencies from the EU, member countries, business, trade unions and other interested parties. Administered from the VU, it now consists of around 250 researchers from more than 40 countries.

ETNC (The European Think-Tank Network on China)

The European Think-tank Network on China (ETNC) is a gathering of China experts from a selection of European research institutes. It is devoted to the policy-oriented study of Chinese foreign policy and relations between China and European countries as well as China and the EU. It facilitates regular exchanges among participating researchers with a view to deepening the understanding within the European policy and research community and the broader public of how Europe, as a complex set of actors, relates with China and how China’s development and evolving global role is likely to impact the future of Europe.

CHOICE (China Observers in Central and Eastern Europe)

China Observers in Central and Eastern Europe (CHOICE) is a multinational consortium of experts providing informed analysis on the rising influence of the People’s Republic of China within the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). CHOICE provides a platform for discussion, information sharing, best practices and collaboration for its members monitoring and evaluating Chinese activity in the CEE. CHOICE offers grounded discussion to critically assess and analytically dissect China’s 16+1 initiative, Belt and Road, and other China-led initiatives targeting CEE countries. CHOICE is the premier organization for China watchers in the CEE to share insight, gather information and build a holistic understanding of China’s activities in the region.
