In this conference, Professor Massot analyzed China’s political economy through the lens of vulnerability, in order to challenge preconceived notions about Chinese politics.

This analysis was complemented by examples drawn from her recently published book with Oxford University Press, titled The Paradox of China’s Vulnerability, which focuses on China’s impact on international resource markets, and a discussion of the conclusions we can draw in light of the third plenary session of the CCP in July 2024.

Indeed, while the third plenum continues the party’s policies under Xi Jinping, which reaffirms the role of the party and the state in the Chinese economy, the growing securitization of China’s economy certainly reflects a position of vulnerability regarding the United States and its technological containment policies toward China.

This open session started with a presentation from Dr Massot, and followed by a discussion under the Chatham House Rule. This Q&A was moderated by Jean-François Di Meglio from Asia Centre and by Anne Séverin from DS Avocas.

With participation from:

  • experts from the French Ministry of Finance
  • ambassadors
  • executives from private companies with interests in the People's Republic of China
  • students

Asia Centre thanks DS Avocats for hosting this event.
