Social Media and Individual's Voice in China: Debates on Work
In the context of a more authoritarian system, social media have become an important space for expressing opinions and concerns in a relatively safe way for Chinese people. This podcast presents debates on work, a question that is central to everyone in China today. It addresses questions such as:
- What are people talking about in China today when it comes to work?
- Are these questions any different from those discussed in Europe?
- Can the Chinese openly discuss these subjects?
- How does this matter for Europeans and for the European Commission?
The podcast shows how Chinese people face similar dilemmas to those experienced in France and other countries, such as debates around retirement. As China’s economic situation faces significant challenges, and as a more “European” way of life — in terms of work hours or social security — appears to many as an ideal, these debates have deep implications even outside China.
