Growing asymmetry: Mapping the import dependencies in EU and US trade with China
New MERICS Trade Dependency Database shows significant EU and US dependencies on certain Chinese goods:
The dependence of the EU and the US on goods they mainly source in China has increased significantly over the last 20 years, while China has reduced its reliance on manufactured goods sourced mainly on US and EU suppliers. This is one of the findings from our analysis of our new database, providing information about global bilateral import dependencies from 2000 – the MERICS Trade Dependency Database.
In his short report “Growing asymmetry: Mapping the import dependencies in EU and US trade with China”, MERICS Senior Economist François Chimits shares insights into the key trends of bilateral dependencies, quantifying the imbalances in dependence on certain goods – which is just one of the many data-driven analyses our new tool makes possible.
