China and geopolitical challenges for Germany and Europe - Discussion with Federal Minister Annalena Baerbock

Europe shouldn’t be torn between China and the US, but invest in its own strengths and in boosting competitiveness – this was the message from German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock at MERICS' event “Focus China – Are Germany and Europe prepared for the geopolitical challenges ahead”.

Foreign Minister Baerbock stressed that in times of geopolitical challenges, strategic clarity, self-confidence and working with partners are crucial. Baerbock also stressed that Germany’s China strategy, which she launched, is “part of the European strategy.” We must “all go in the same direction” in dealing with China, which “is still a competitor and systemic rival that strives to gain strategic competitive advantages by exploiting competitive gaps.”

MERICS hosted the discussion on China and current geopolitical challenges for Germany and Europe with German Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Stefan Mair (Director, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP)), Daniela Schwarzer (Member of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board), Sabine Stricker-Kellerer (Attorney at Law, SSK Asia), and MERICS Executive Director Mikko Huotari.
