Opinion Piece: David and Goliath: Global Gateway vs. China's Belt and Road Initiative (in Spanish)
In this piece for El Confidencial, Bruegel Senior Fellow Alicia García-Herrero offers a comparative analysis of the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the European Union’s Global Gateway (GG). Economic muscles, degree and type of bureaucratic governance, strategic anchoring and guidance, and prior relations with recipient countries are all factors García-Herrero point to as important differences between the two initiatives. Differences that she argues are important for the EU to understand and address if the potential of the Global Gateway initiative is to fully materialise.
