Opinion Piece: China's EV makers can't follow Japan's 'flying geese' offshoring strategy

In this piece published in Nikkei Asia, Bruegel Senior Fellow Alicia García-Herrero dives into the challenges that the otherwise booming Chinese EV sector currently faces. Among these, she highlights protectionist measures in other countries, a change in political priorities in places like the EU and a drop in the utilisation rate of China's overall automobile industry as some of the biggest ones.

On solutions to this, Japan’s offshoring strategy in the 1980s, which helped them address similar challenges to their automotive industry, might bring important lessons for China. However, Alicia García-Herrero goes on to point out important differences between the Japanese and Chinese case, which makes the Japanese approach very difficult to implement in China today.
