“Here to stay” – Chinese state-affiliated hacking for strategic goals

In recent years, Chinese hacking activities have not only increased, they have also become more sophisticated. And they follow strategic goals of China’s government. According to data from the independent research consortium EuRepoC, China was the country responsible for the largest number of cyberattacks worldwide between 2005 and 2023 with 240.

While the attribution of cyberattacks to state actors is difficult, some involvement of the Chinese government is likely given its quest to control the country’s cyberspace and cyber actors, argues MERICS Analyst Antonia Hmaidi.
