Opinion Piece: Taiwan poised for economic bounceback in 2024

In this opinion piece for Asia Times, Bruegel Senior Fellow Alicia García-Herrero offers her take on the economic outlook for Taiwan. Generally, the Taiwanese economy face a set of internal and external conditions that are likely to make it bounce back in 2024 from an underwhelming 2023. National elections might affect the derisking policy vis-à-vis China but not the overall economic trajectory.

Yet, there is one big unknown, namely the geopolitics surround Taiwan. This is a premise that Taiwan cannot escape, and which increasingly is being taken into account by foreign investors – not least the possibility of a military conflict in the Taiwan Strait.
