The outcome of the 2024 US elections will affect the geopolitical and geoeconomic context in which EU-China relations unfold and might lead to changes not only in China’s international behavior and its approach towards Europe, but also in Europe’s own strategic calculations.

To discuss these issues, MERICS organized a foresight exercise in the context of the 2024 MERICS European China Talent Program (ECTP). The workshop brought together a group of around 20 young professionals from across Europe with a strong China background to discuss the main risks that Europe’s China policy will face after the presidential elections in the US. Held in a closed-door, off-the-record setting, the 2.5-hour interactive workshop encouraged informal discussions on potential future challenges depending on the outcome of the elections, and it sought to identify which of these require the most urgent action by European stakeholders.
